VDOE assists schools and school divisions in administering programs authorized by the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended. During the 2016-2017 transition to ESSA, ESEA programs will operate primarily under the guidelines established by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA). Accountability provisions under ESSA will take effect during the 2018-2019 school year.
Each of the titles or chapters of the law pertain to a different set of programs where federal funding is authorized for improving public education and achieving the objectives of the law. VDOE provides technical assistance to divisions annually at the Federal Program Coordinators’ Academy, as well as during program-specific training opportunities.
