History and Social Science Sample Scope and Sequence Guides
In the spring of 2001 the Virginia Department of Education developed sample scope and sequence guides for English, mathematics, and science in kindergarten through grade eight and in core high school courses as an additional resource to help school divisions develop curricula aligned to the 1995 Standards of Learning in those content areas. These sample guides will be updated as each of those content Standards of Learning are revised.
Sample history and social science scope and sequence guides that have been aligned with the 2001 History and Social Science Standards of Learning have now been added to the Department of Educations Web site at: http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/solscope/. These sample documents provide guidance on how the essential understandings, knowledge, and skills that are identified in the 2001 History and Social Science Standards of Learning and the 2001 History and Social Science Crosswalk of Common Content/Curriculum Framework may be introduced to students in a logical, sequential, and meaningful manner. Just as in the Crosswalk of Common Content, the sample scope and sequence guides contain underlined information that represents history and social science content that is common to both the 1995 and the 2001 History and Social Science Standards of Learning. This information should be useful to school divisions as they realign their history and social science curricula to the 2001 standards.
Copies of all of the documents mentioned previously are available on the Department of Educations website:
